Gallery: Spills and thrills at Hockenheim over the years

For Formula 1, it's a welcome return to Hockenheim this week, the German fans having missed out on their national Grand Prix in 2017.

The Hockenheimring of today is very different from the venue that first hosted the German Grand Prix back in 1970.

The circuit's long straights that ran through the Baden-Württemberg forest were consigned to history in 2002 upon the track's complete redesign and renovation.

It's still a fast and furious lay-out however, with drivers barreling down the main straight at 335km/h but also rushing through a highly technical section.

There have been plenty of thrills and spill over the recent years, so here's a compilation featuring those who got it wrong around the 4.5km, 17-turn track
