According to Formula One’s official tyre supplier Pirelli, Nico Rosberg’s spectacular blow-out in FP2 was due to “an external cut into the tyre structure”.

Yet, the same Rosberg told reporters during the FIA post-qualifying press conference that Mercedes was still unsure as to what triggered the failure. “There is theory but no real evidence, so that’s a bit worrying for sure.”
