Seventeen-year-old Billy Monger's horrendous accident last weekend at Donington was a grim reminder that risk will always remain imbedded at all echelons of motorsport.
But when misfortune befalls one of its own, the racing community pulls together to help. As Billy faces a huge challenge going forward, with the loss of his lower legs, the young F4 racer and his family require support.
A JustGiving crowdfunding initiative was quickly set-up and the response has been nothing short of extraordinary with more than £450,000 raised from generous donors in mere hours!
Thanks to social media, from Lewis Hamilton to Jenson Button, every single F1 driver on the grid as well as many other motorsport figures all over the world have pledged their support for the talented youngster.
It's good to know you have a family.
