Alonso back in the saddle with Renault in Bahrain

Fernando Alonso resumed his 2021 preparations with Renault on Wednesday, the Spaniard running 93 laps at Bahrain onboard a 2018-spec car.

The Enstone squad had dispatched a car and crews to Sakhir last week for a four-day program catered to young drivers Christian Lundgaard, Guanyu Zhou and Oscar Piastri.

But the team has stayed on for two extra days to provide Alonso with another opportunity to stretch his legs in an F1 car ahead of his return to the grid next season.

Last month, Alonso had kickstarted his preparations with a limited 100-km outing at Barcelona where he sampled the French outfit's 2020 contender.

Renault F1 team boss Cyril Abiteboul was hoping to offer the two-time world champion more mileage onboard the outfit's R.S.20 at the post-season young drivers' test at Abu Dhabi.

But so far, Renault's request for an exception to run Alonso at Yas Marina has not received a favourable response.

Phillip van Osten

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
