This weekend takes place on the grounds of Thirlestane Castle in Scotland the Sir Jackie Stewart Classic motoring event celebrating the three-time F1 World Champion.

While the prestigious event will showcase to the public, among other things, Sir Jackie's outstanding achievements, it will all be done in aid of Race Against Dementia, the global charity founded by the F1 legend to fund pioneering research into the prevention and cure of dementia.

But on Saturday, before heading to Thirlestane Castle, Sir Jackie journeyed to Chirnside Parish Church in Duns for a quiet moment of remembrance for his good friend and fellow flying Scot Jim Clark.

"This morning just before the @sjysclassic I went with my family to pay tribute to one of my best friends, Jim Clark," Sir Jackie wrote on Instagram.

"He was a humble man, a great driver and a best friend.

"It was Jim’s accident that spurred me on to pushing for safety in motorsport, as if he could have a fatal accident, then it could happen to anyone.

"Formula 1 has come so far from his time & he would be proud to see what the sport has become."

And no doubt Jim Clark would be equally proud of Sir Jackie's extraordinary contribution to Formula 1's safety and legacy.

Phillip van Osten

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
