Formula 1’s heartfelt gift to new dad Fernando Alonso

While Aston Martin’s F1 car is currently giving Fernando Alonso some massive engine vibrations and reliability headaches, the Spaniard and partner Melissa Jimenez are celebrating a much smoother "delivery" off the track with the arrival of their first baby, Leonard.

And Formula 1 wasted no time inducting its newest (and smallest) member by gifting to the proud parents their son’s first set of F1 paddock credentials.

Alonso, clearly amused by a gesture that perfectly blends the sport’s sense of tradition with a touch of humor, shared the moment with a simple but telling response: “Big thanks to F1! First of many.”

Given the 44-year-old’s relentless career, that “first of many” feels less like a joke and more like a warning. Fans have already begun imagining future grids featuring Leonard alongside the next generation of elite drivers, or perhaps even his 65-year-old father!

For now, though, amid a challenging season with Team Silverstone, Alonso has something far more important than points on the board: a new teammate at home.

Phillip van Osten

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
