A good vintage: Remembering Sir Patrick Stewart’s epic F1 moment

We’re remembering the legendary Sir Patrick Stewart, who has sadly passed away at the age of 86 at his Los Angeles home following a private and brief battle with Lewy body dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

While the world celebrates his iconic cinematic journeys in franchises like Star Trek and X-Men, motorsport enthusiasts will forever cherish his genuine and infectious passion for Formula 1, with one particular moment standing tall in racing folklore: the 2017 Canadian Grand Prix.

Tasked with conducting the podium interviews, Stewart brought his trademark theatrical flair to Montreal, charming the crowd before turning his attention to third-place finisher Daniel Ricciardo.

Knowing what was expected when the Australian driver prepared his signature celebration – the inevitable ‘shoey’, Stewart didn't hesitate to join in.

To the absolute delight of the fans, the then-76-year-old actor happily chugged champagne straight out of Ricciardo’s sweaty race boot.

When a bewildered Lewis Hamilton joked about the hygiene of the footwear, Stewart delivered a legendary, viral punchline: "I don't care – I'm on the podium for the first time; I'll drink out of anybody's shoe!"

Rest in peace, Sir Patrick. You brought stellar entertainment to the galaxy, and an unforgettable presence to the F1 paddock. Cheers to a truly good vintage!
