4 — Red Bull’s new bodywork

While Renault still strives to improve the performance and reliability of its V6 power unit, Red Bull turned up with a bunch of chassis-related innovations at Montreal. The revised RB11 featured new three-vane deflectors when these used to be single elements. The updated design draws some inspiration from Mercedes and also follows a concept seen at sister squad Toro Rosso. Both drivers sampled it on track but only Daniil Kvyat ran the new solution in qualifying and during the race. These vanes aimed to help better redirect the airflow towards the car’s floor, which creates most of the downforce.

The Red Bull was also fitted with a new engine cover. Unlike on all the other cars, it is made out of a single piece while also sporting a smoother, flowing design and tighter sidepods compared to the old version (see how the “RENAULT” logo appears less slanted on the above image).
