Technical analysis: Spa and Monza

Mercedes’ impressive development capacity

The Mercedes W06 was fitted with a new rear wing at Monza, which was much less curved than the “spoon” version introduced at Spa. The latter was a radical concept that had first been spotted on the 2006 McLaren MP4-21.

The rationale behind both designs is the same – reducing the car’s aerodynamic drag by refining the outer sections of the main element where vortices are created – but it was implemented in a less extreme fashion in Italy. It’s also worth noticing that both solutions feature one less louvre in the endplates than the Barcelona spec (see white arrows).

The centre section of the main board is thicker and generates most of the downforce, while also directing the airflow upwards in combination with the diffuser.
