McLaren’s “shark fin” engine cover
A more compact ERS cooler installation has allowed Woking aerodynamicists to further trim down the MP4-30’s engine cover.
Its crest is now much thinner (compare yellow arrows), while the car’s rear end sits lower (see blue and white arrows). McLaren’s tighter package means that a cleaner airflow is now channeled towards the rear wing.
Last but not least, last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix also saw the British outfit revert to its long nosecone, which is more suited to the Monza layout. Indeed, the elongated design generates less aerodynamic load, but above all less drag).
This gallery is only a selection and not an exhaustive list of all the technical novelties that were introduced in Belgium and Italy. We shall add that Lotus sampled an updated front wing assembly, while Red Bull tested a new S-duct system.
