Musical chairs: the 2019 driver line-up takes shape

POSSIBLE

Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso is probably the biggest card left to play in the 2019 driver market. Will he stay or will he go? With McLaren holding a multi-year option on his services, it's hard to see him moving to another team in Formula 1. However he could defect to IndyCar in pursuit of the last leg of the Triple Crown of Motorsport. We hope he doesn't go - F1 would be much the poorer without him - and frankly we wonder whether he will actually want to pull the pin on his Grand Prix career when the moment comes.

Stoffel Vandoorne
If Alonso stays at McLaren, it's hard to see the team retaining the services of Stoffel Vandoorne who has failed to thrive at the team alongside such an illustrious team mate. If Alonso does go then McLaren may need to keep Vandoorne in order to preserve a sense of continuity, but realistically the Belgian needs to have a couple of cracking races after the summer shutdown if he's to keep his place.

Kimi Raikkonen
Should Alonso decide to move on, McLaren might seek another popular, well-known former champion to replace him - and that could give Kimi Raikkonen a chance of a seat if he is indeed ousted from Ferrari. Daniel Ricciardo was another suggestion for similar reasons, but that's now ruled out with Friday's announcement of the Australian's new role at Renault.

Lando Norris
McLaren's official test and reserve driver has been touted as their next rising star - but is he ready for the limelight yet? His current Formula 2 season isn't going as well as he had been hoping for (and not a match for his arch rival George Russell) so now he's looking rather less of a sure bet to replace Vandoorne in 2019 and increasingly linked instead to Toro Rosso.

Carlos Sainz
Carlos Sainz has been mentioned as a candidate to join the team alongside Alonso to make it a all-Spanish driver line-up. It's unlikely to happen as long as Sainz is in the running for a full Red Bull seat, but if that door is slammed shut in his face then maybe the future is orange for Sainz after all.
