Musical chairs: the 2019 driver line-up takes shape

Toro Rosso

Pierre Gasly, Toro Rosso

PROBABLE

Pierre Gasly
Pierre Gasly's arrival in Formula 1 was somewhat delayed, but once he got his chance he was quickly able to show what he can do behind the wheel of the STR13 and seems like a strong bet to continue with the team in 2019. There's even a chance that Red Bull could call him up to the senior team to replace Daniel Ricciardo, but would that be too soon for the French driver who has been in the sport less than a year?

POSSIBLE

Lando Norris
Toro Rosso tried to secure Lando Norris' services from McLaren earlier this year but were rebuffed, so the Briton is definitely on the team's radar. If he's not offered a seat at Woking for 2019 then maybe he'll jump to Toro Rosso of his own accord? He would be replacing Brendon Hartley, who seems highly unlikely to stay in Formula 1; it's also hard to see how Marko's preference for giving Dan Ticktum a chance can happen given the young driver doesn't yet have the required superlicence points.

Carlos Sainz
If Norris doesn't work out then maybe Toro Rosso will exercise their recall over Carlos Sainz, who was put out on loan to Renault this season. It seems unlikely that the Spaniard would be happy to take such a backwards step, and if he's overlooked for the full Red Bull seat in the wake of Ricciardo's exit then it's hard to see why he wouldn't take the hint and go looking elsewhere on the grid to a team like McLaren.
