TETHERS

According to Article 10.3.6 of the technical regulations, each wheel must be attached to the chassis with two tethers each “with a cross sectional area greater than 110mm²”. At both ends, each tether must have its own separate attachments that can endure “a tensile force of 70kN”. Finally, there must be at least 10cm “between the centres of the two attachment points” on the survival cell.

LASER RIDE HEIGHT SENSOR

Attached to the chassis is the ride height sensor (see the yellow device on the Sauber above), which sends a laser beam towards the ground through a small hole that has been purposely pierced in the bodywork. Teams assess the ride height of the car from the time it takes for the laser to hit the ground and come back to the sensor, with the device able to make the measurement hundreds of times per second.
