STILL PLENTY OF WORK TO DO

While designed by Dallara, the Haas rear wing evidently draws inspiration from the 2015-spec Ferrari layout – at least in the endplates (save for the lower part) and the main board. The upper flap, however, seems shorter. Here again, expect the Haas and Ferrari rear wings to grow more different in the near future, as the Scuderia unleashes its 2016 version.

The rear crash structures are identical, while the diffusers have similarities – see the winglets under the crash structure – but also differences – the leading edge is flat on the Ferrari while curved on the Haas, the aero elements on the edges are different, etc.

Save for a spectacular front wing failure on the opening day and a few software and electronic glitches thereafter, the Haas VF-16 racked up valuable mileage without any major issue on its test debut. With 281 laps in four days, the US newcomers enjoyed more track time than McLaren-Honda (257) for instance. That said, more than eight days of pre-season testing would be needed to really fine-tune the car. Ride height, antiroll bars, springs, aero balance, differential setups, all these areas will have to be properly explored and mastered to meet Haas’ ambitious target of scoring points during its maiden F1 season.
