Barcelona’s technical upgrades in pictures

10. Mercedes: a little inspiration from Ferrari?

In Barcelona, the Silver Arrows featured a “monkey seat” design that was similar to Ferrari and Toro Rosso, i.e. it was maintained by a single upper support and not by a pair of side panels. Since 2014, the technical regulations forbid any piece of bodywork to line up with the car’s exhaust but do allow components to appear above or underneath said exhaust. Fine-tuning the “monkey seat” winglet has thus become vital in order to make up for lost downforce after the beam wing was ruled out.
