HEAT
Coloured in blue on the picture above, the pipework branching off the ERS cooler connects both to the MGU-H, which sits within the ‘Vee’ of the engine, as well as to the MGU-K, which can be seen on the left-hand side of the unit. While all engine manufacturers now have the same placement for this kinetic energy recovery system, Ferrari only adopted such an installation on this year’s 059/5.
The multi-tube exhaust pipes are made of very thin metal sheets, which leads engine constructors to wrap up the manifolds in an insulating cover in order to limit heat loss and foster gas expansion. While all exhaust pipes were enveloped in the same heat protection on last year’s PU106B power unit, each pipe is individually wrapped up on the PU106C. The collector, for its part, seems to be ensconced in a protective blanket.
With the metal bezels off, one can spot two of the three ignition coils (in red) featuring on this side of the engine, with each of the six cylinders of the V6 having its own ignition coil.
One can also notice that the Mercedes air intake has kept its characteristic periscope shape, as it drops forwards to the front of the engine and feeds air to the compressor.
