TORO ROSSO DROPS IT ON THE FLOOR

Toro Rosso has changed the slot setup of the STR11’s floor. Not only has the shape of the slots been modified, their number has been lowered from 15 to 12. The idea behind these apertures is to channel the high-pressure airflow coming from above the floor towards the zone located between the tyre and the diffuser. This will in turn bring more energy to the air flowing along the diffuser’s edges and push away the dirty wake coming off the rotating rear wheels.

One of the vanes attached to the floor has been split into two elements (see close-up in the bottom picture). These fins also aim at accelerating the airflow between the wheel and the diffuser in order to minimise the turbulence as much as possible. Finally, the winglets attached to the front and rear brake ducts have been redesigned.

Toro Rosso reported that this thorough aerodynamic update gave satisfactory results in free practice, though it will be hard to make up for the lack of development on the engine for the Red Bull junior outfit.
