ASYMMETRICAL DRUMS

Several teams – including Mercedes, Ferrari, Force India, and Sauber – fitted asymmetrical brake drums (the carbon cases housing the brake systems) on their cars. The goal is to cool down differently the left tyre, which must cope with the bigger load at Monza.

On the Ferrari SF16-H and Force India VJM09, the left brake drum was more closed off while it was the opposite on the Mercedes W07, at least on the front end (an opening is sometimes made at the rear). On the Sauber C35, the right brake drum was more open at the top and closed off underneath, while the setup was reversed on the left drum.
