Tech F1i: Mercedes and Ferrari press on, unrelenting

NUMEROUS MODIFICATIONS

Even though the cascade elements will disappear next year, Mercedes redesigned them for Sochi. The two flaps of the main cascade extend to the endplate, to which they are now attached (compare the red arrows).

On the inside of the wing, two small winglets have been added (see the yellow arrows). It is these which now generate a vortex in this zone, and no longer the curvature of the two flaps (indicated by an orange arrow).

These minimal adjustments indicate to which level of detail the teams' aerodynamicists work to gain a few fractions of a second, which are crucial in the case of a competition as close as that between Brackley and Maranello. The accumulation of these alterations produces in the end a more or less significant gain.

This revised wing was mounted on both Silver Arrows in qualifying and in the race.
