Max Verstappen will take a combined grid penalty of 15 places after qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Toro Rosso will use a fifth power unit of the season in Verstappen's car, meaning the rookie is the first driver to exceed the limit of four for the year. The result is an automatic 10 place grid penalty, which will be applied after Saturday's qualifying session.

Verstappen has already been hit with a penalty of five places for causing a collision with Romain Grosjean in the Monaco Grand Prix, and the two penalties combined will lead to a drop of 15 places in Montreal.

If Verstappen is unable to take the full 15 place penalty in terms of grid position, the rest of the penalty will be carried over in to the race in the following way:

  • 1-5 unused grid positions = 5 second time penalty
  • 6-10 unused grid positions = 10 second time penalty
  • 10-20 unused grid positions = drive-through penalty
