In addition to its Honda power unit deal for next season, Sauber has apparently also concluded a technical partnership with McLaren.

The Swiss outfit has out-sourced gearbox manufacturing in the recent years, and currently enjoys a package deal with Ferrari, the supplier of its power unit.

According to Motorsport.com, Sauber has sought an arrangement with McLaren with regard to the supply of a transmission unit, although it is not ready to confirm the partnership.

"I can say nothing on that," she told Motorsport.com.

"Details on the transmission side will not be disclosed right now. We'll see in time. No further details at this stage, it is too early, really."

A technical association between McLaren and Sauber could likely provide the Woking-based outfit with the ability to access Sauber's windtunnel in Hinwill.

McLaren currently conducts its aero work at Toyota's facility in Cologne.

A partnership between the two teams could also lead to McLaren placing one of its junior drivers with Sauber.

Would a working relationship between the two teams, should it be confirmed, definitely rule out McLaren changing engine supplier's for next season?

Maybe not...

Phillip van Osten

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
