Ferrari gets extra wet tyre test with Pirelli at Fiorano

Ferrari has signed up for a wet weather test with Pirelli which will take place at Fiorano next month with a 2015 SF15-T chassis.

Pirelli has scheduled a series of dry and wet weather tests this year as it develops its 2018 compounds.

But the Italian manufacturer requested from the FIA additional wet weather test opportunities using older-spec cars, which Pirelli believe will still provide useful data despite running different size tyres.

"We have a test scheduled in Fiorano on June 2," Pirelli F1 boss Mario Isola told Motorsport.com.

"It’s the 2015 car with the old sizes, just to explore some new directions. At the moment it’s the only one.

"We have the other tests scheduled in the official planning with the 2017 cars, and now we are checking if we can organise something else.

"This is the plan, to have this one and a couple more sessions."

The Scuderia will perhaps take advantage of the extra running to put one of its young drivers to work, with Antonio Giovinazzi, Charles Leclerc and Antonio Fuocco as possible candidates for the test.

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
