Raikkonen 'pays the price' for crucial error

Kimi Raikkonen will line up behind team mate Sebastian Vettel on tomorrow's Canadian GP grid, in fourth place, after an inopportune mistake cost him crucial time.

As Friday's pace-setter, the Finn was looking to challenge for pole, going all in on his ultimate round in qualifying only to get caught out in Turn 2.

"There was a lot of speed on the last lap, but I made a mistake in corner two," said Raikkonen.

"I improved a little bit, but I couldn’t make the lap very good, and I paid the price for it.

"It was a little bit more tricky today than yesterday just to get a good feeling with the tyres, but that’s how it goes."

Vettel believes Ferrari has the pace to win in Canada

Raikkonen admitted that he wasn't surprised by the 0.8s deficit with poleman Lewis Hamilton, but is keeping his hopes high for the race, aware of the unpredictable nature of the event.

"At places like this, if you get one corner wrong, you’re going to lose massive lap time," he said.

"Our car has been good, but for whatever reason we’ve struggled a bit in qualifying.

"Often it’s quite a hectic race here, a lot of things happen," he said.

"You never know here, it’s one of those places things can change quite quickly. We’ll try again, we’ll see what happens. We should have good speed."

In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
