Sebastian Vettel lost his cool while the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was under a Safety Car period this afternoon, handing back to Lewis Hamilton what the German saw as a deliberate brake test.

Hamilton was slowly leading the pack behind the Safety Car out of Turn 16 when he appeared to suddenly slow, surprising Vettel who punted the back of the Mercedes.

Fuming, the German then pulled up alongside Hamilton, gesturing furiously and hitting briefly the right from of the Brit's car.

"He brake tested me. What teh hell is going on!" quipped Vettel on the radio.

"Vettel literally just turned into me and hit me," was Hamilton's response.

The incident was immediately investigated by the stewards, and after much debate they ultimately hit Vettel with a 10-second 'stop and go penalty' for dangerous driving.

Regardless of the consequences in terms of points, the bromance between the two drivers will certainly suffer a set-back!

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
