Daniel Ricciardo topped the Hungarian GP timesheets in FP1 with an impressive performance which left the Red Bull driver clear by 0.234s.
The Aussie, who is behind the wheel of an upgraded RB13 this weekend, set his fastest time on Pirelli's supersoft compound and came within 0.005s of the Hungaroring's track record which dates back to 2004.
Kimi Raikkonen was second for Ferrari while Lewis Hamilton was third, both men settling into the groove and the low-grip conditions which caught several drivers out.
Haas' FP1 runner Antonio Giovinazzi suffered a premature halt to his session when he lost the rear of the car mid-corner and slid into the barriers, which in turn brought out the red flags while his damaged car was evacuated.
The incident didn't likely earn him any points with Kevin Magnussen, whose car he was using.
The red flags were out again in the closing stages of the 90-minute session when Jolyon Palmer, having run wide over the kerbs, ran over his front wing. A puncture ensued and the Brit parked his Renault to avoid further damage.
