Audi Abt driver Lucas di Grassi was crowned Formula E champion after the second round of Montreal's ePrix won by Techeetah's Jean-Eric Vergne.

Di Grassi's chances doubled overnight after title contender Sebastien Buemi was disqualified from yesterday's race for an under-weight car, suddenly finding himself with an almost insurmountable 19-point deficit before Sunday's final race.

The Brazilian ran a conservative race all afternoon, keeping his nose clean and avoiding unnecessary risk.

Frontrunners Felix Rosenqvist and Jean-Eric Vergne battled it out at the front with the Frenchman ultimately gaing the upper hand  against his Mahindra rival.

After a miserable Saturday, Sebastien Buemi's fortunes on Sunday continued to run downhill. Chaos ensued shortly after the start during which the Renault-e.dams driver was hit from behind by Antonio Felix da Costa.

The incident forced Buemi into a pitstop to tend to some damaged bodywork before working his way back to a disappointing 11th place.

While the Swiss relinquishes his Formula E crown to Lucas di Grassi, his Renault-e.dams outfit finishes first in the team standings.

DS Virgin's José Maria Lopez completed the Montreal podium behind Vergne and Rosenqvist, while Sam Bird and Nick Heidfeld rounded off the top five.

Lucas di Grassi is the third different driver to win the Formula E title after Nelson Piquet in season 1 and Sébastien Buemi in season 2.
