FIA - Zero tolerance for abusing track limits in Singapore

The FIA won't accept any transgression of track limits in the first few corners at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Drivers could have been tempted to hug a faster extreme inside line at the apex of Turn 2 which turns right as they approach Turn 3.

But F1's governing body has installed a deterrent to the ploy, installing a cone after Turn 2 which drivers will have to go around should they exceed the track's limits

"Any driver who fails to negotiate Turn 2 by using the track, and who passes completely to the right of the orange kerb element, must keep to the right of the red and white polystyrene block and rejoin the track on the outside of Turn 3," wrote F1 race director Charlie Whiting.

The FIA also announced that several areas of the Marina Bay circuit have also been resurfaced, including the stretch between Turn 1 and 2.

The width of the pitlane has also been slighty increased by 275 mm.

Phillip van Osten

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
