F1 teams surprised by cost of 'Halo' device

Formula 1 teams are perplexed by the relatively high cost of the controversial Halo safety device that has been made mandatory for 2018.

The new component was the subject of much debate over the summer, with a majority of drivers taking a stance against its introduction, believing it was at odds with Formula 1's DNA.

According to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, three companies have submitted to the FIA an application to supply the 'Halo' following the governing body's specifications and requirements.

"Those who meet the requirements can then sell Halo to F1, Formula 2 and Formula E teams," the magazine claims.

But a big issue will be price, with insiders reporting that a single Halo will cost somewhere between EUR 13,000 and 24,000.

The figures may not appear important by F1 standards, but Force India's Andy Green is surprised by the cost.

"It will be expensive," said the Silverstone-based team's tech boss.

"We not only have to order Halos for the cars, but also for the FIA load tests."
