F1 legend Nigel Mansell says Lewis Hamilton deserves a knighthood from the British Empire following the conquest of his fourth world title.

The Mercedes driver was crowned in Mexico City on Sunday, capping a banner year with a fourth world title with two races to go on the F1 calendar.

The feat saw Hamilton eclipse Sir Jackie Stewart's record of three world crowns for a British driver, while the outright record in F1 remains with Michael Schumacher and his seven world championships.

Nigel Mansell, who captured the title in 1992 with Williams, says Hamilton should be revered for his outstanding achievements which also include 62 Grand Prix wins.

Asked on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show if the British driver should be knighted, Mansell gave a nod of approval.

"I think he deserves everything he gets," said the 64-year-old former F1 driver.

"Lewis, for me, is a breath of fresh air. He crosses so many boundaries, he’s a nice lad and he’s misunderstood at times.

"I think now he should be revered in every way he can be.

"Lewis is one of the greats. I forecasted it a few years ago, that I think Lewis can beat all the records, he’s that good. He can be the best of the best of the best.

"I think he can go on to win eight world titles."
