Sainz to spend night in hospital, scans show no injuries

Carlos Sainz will spend a precautionary night in hospital after scans showed he has no injuries following his heavy crash in Sochi.

The Toro Rosso driver went off during FP3 at Turn 13 - a tight right hander at the end of a DRS zone - with his car becoming embedded below the tecpro barrier. The session was red flagged with 25 minutes still to run, with Sainz being extricated from the car and giving the thumbs up to TV cameras as he was loaded in to an ambulance on the back of a stretcher.

The FIA confirmed he was conscious as he was airlifted to hospital and Toro Rosso later released a statement saying Sainz would spend the night in hospital due the severity of the crash.

"After arriving at the Sochi Hospital 4, Carlos Sainz, who never lost consciousness, underwent a medical examination, including a full body scan. The scan showed that the driver has no injuries.

"However, he will be staying in the hospital overnight as a precautionary measure, which is the normal procedure in these circumstances."

Sainz himself tweeted an image from his hospital bed, saying he hopes to be allowed to race on Sunday once he is discharged.
