Brawn suggests 'league table' to rank and relegate F1 venues

Ross Brawn says F1 should aim for quality and not just quantity when it comes to boosting the sport's calendar of races.

Since taking the reins of Formula 1 at the end of 2016, Liberty Media has often promoted the idea of increasing the number of races on the calendar.

This year's schedule will include 21 rounds, with France and Germany returning to the calendar. In the longer term a 25-race season is forecast however.

"The crucial thing is the quality of the race. There's no value in just putting the number of races up," Brawn told British Airways' Business Life magazine.

"But if we can provide great races in great locations throughout the world, then we should consider it.

As F1 studies an expansion in the US, commercial boss Sean Bratches recently scouted a site in Miami, while CEO Chase Carey has held preliminary talks with the promoters of a potential Denmark GP in Copenhagen.

But any expansion should not be to the detriment of the quality of the venues, with Brawn suggesting a rating system to downgrade poorly-run or less successful events.

"I'd love to see in the future a league table of races, where over time we've got a waiting list of top-class circuits and promoters that are waiting to get into Formula 1, and then if there's any race that is not working well, you relegate that and put a strong race in."
