Newey convinced a grid drop awaits Ricciardo in Montreal

Red Bull tech boss Adrian Newey says Daniel Ricciardo will be hit with a grid penalty in Montreal next weekend following the Aussie's MGU-K failure in Monaco.

It was initially expected that Ricciardo's MGU-K could be salvaged by Renault for the Canadian Grand Prix, but according to Newey that won't be the case.

"He will definitely be taking some penalties in Montreal, we haven’t heard at the moment just how many," Newey told Reuters.

With regard to engine component usage so far this season, the Red Bull driver took on a second complete power unit in China.

Given that drivers are only allowed two MGU-K, Energy Store and Control Electronics elements before penalties kick in, adding a third MGU-K would set back Ricciardo by 10 spots on next Sunday's grid, and five spots thereafter if an additional ES or CE is used.

"One of things there is whether the battery was damaged or not in Monaco, so until we know that from Renault we don’t know exactly what we’re facing. The K is definitely a penalty," added Newey,

Newey laughed off reports from last week suggesting Ricciardo's MGU-K was "salvageable".

"I rather doubt it, considering it caught fire and was a burnt out, charred wreck," he said.

"I would be somewhat surprised at that one."
