Wolff sees Hamilton's faith as 'an exceptional power'

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says Lewis Hamilton's religious beliefs should not be judged but considered as a vital ingredient of his motivation to succeed.

Hamilton is currently leading the title battle against arch-rival Sebastian Vettel, the two men set to resume their rivalry at the end of the week at Spa.

Both drivers are fighting this year for a fifth world championship crown, a number equal to the titles achieved by the great Juan Manuel Fangio.

Whoever prevails at the end of the season will likely be considered the greatest F1 driver of the current generation, but Wolff insists he doesn't need any numbers to tell him who is the best, the Austrian manager also underlining the power of Hamilton's faith.

"Lewis has a very clear vision of what he believes," says Wolff.

"It makes him the most successful, modern driver in Formula 1. And I think we should see it as inspiration how he can find more and more strength in difficult periods."

Hamilton recently said that he felt "God had his hand over me", a faith supported by regular prayer and visits to church.

"It gives him an exceptional power," adds the Mercedes boss. "And where I come from, I have learned not to judge people on what they need to perform well."
