Formula 1 calls off Holland, Spain and Monaco GPs!

As expected, Formula 1 has officially postponed the Dutch, Spanish and Monaco Grands Prix that were scheduled during the month of May.

The decision comes after the cancellation and postponement of the opening four races of the 2020 season due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

"In view of the continued global spread of Covid-19 and after ongoing discussions with Formula 1 and the three promoters, it has today been confirmed that the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix 2020, Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix 2020 and Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix 2020 will be postponed,” read a statement from Formula 1.

"Due to the ongoing and fluid nature of the Covid-19 situation globally, the FIA, Formula 1 and the three promoters have taken these decisions in order to ensure the health and safety of the travelling staff, championship participants and fans, which remains our primary concern."

The latest postponements mean that Baku on June 7 is now tentatively scheduled to open this year's campaign.

“The FIA and Formula 1 expect to begin the 2020 championship season as soon as it is safe to do so after May and will continue to regularly monitor the ongoing Covid-19 situation."

In a side note related to Monaco, the small state announced on Thursday afternoon that Prince Albert of Monaco has tested positive for the coronavirus, although the Palace insisted there was currently no immediate threat to the Prince's health.

While an effort will be made to re-instate the Dutch and Spanish events during the August period, it's highly unlikely that Monaco will reappear on the calendar given the specific temporary nature of the Principality's street circuit, the building of which had already started.
