Formula 1 seeking to include F2 and F3 in opening rounds

Formula 1 is determined to include both its F2 and F3 support series in its opening race weekends according to team owner Trevor Carlin.

As Europe slowly but surely alleviates coronavirus measures in the coming months, the prospect of F1 raising the curtain on its season in Austria in early July is gathering pace.

F1 boss Chase Carey outlined on Monday the sport's plan to put itself in gear, with a series of European races held over the summer behind closed doors followed by a string of fly-away events taking place in the fourth quarter of the year.

F1's roadmap - if green-lighted by local authorities - would include double-header events at the Red Bull Ring and another double dose of racing at Silverstone, or four races in four weeks, and a bill that would include Grand Prix racing's junior series.

"What I heard is this Red Bull Ring double-header, Silverstone double-header plan and they would try to incorporate F2 and F3 into that," Carlin told Reuters.

"I think it’s a great idea if its achievable. That’s the bottom line. Hopefully it is."

Carlin, whose motorsport group includes teams in IndyCar and the FIA F2 and F3 Championships, believes the extended break enjoyed by everyone this year should help mitigate the effects of a four-week non-stop period of racing.

"If everyone’s just had two months off they should be fresh and raring to go," added the British team owner who nurtured in the past the talent of the likes of Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg, Daniel Ricciardo or Lando Norris.

"When people are moaning about three (race weekends) on the trot, I don’t get it."

Furthermore, Carlin isn't concerned by Formula 1's obligation of running its race weekends behind closed doors given that most of the junior series' exposure is derived from television coverage.

"The biggest disappointment would be for the mums and dads who want to be with their sons and daughters at the races. But they’ll understand," he added.

"At the end of the day F3 and F2 are journey championships, championships you need to do to get to the end goal which is Formula One.

"So from a sponsors’ point of view, it’s not quite so crucial."
