Racing Point drops 'brake duct' appeal as F1 teams reach resolution for 2021

Racing Point has dropped its appeal against the FIA's decision to punish the team for using brake ducts that transgressed the technical rules.

The Silverstone-based team was fined €400,000 and docked 15 championship points for using on its 2020 car a brake duct design copied from Mercedes' 2019 W11.

Racing Point had appealed the verdict while Ferrari also joined the legal proceedings as it contested the leniency of the judgment.

But a resolution reached at Monza by the sport's teams involving new FIA rules for next season on listed and non-listed part that will prevent reverse engineering of rivals' cars has led to Racing Point's exit from the appeal process, a move that Ferrari is likely to follow while Renault, McLaren and Williams have already dropped their own appeals.

"We welcome the resolution the teams have agreed, and we’re pleased the FIA has provided much-needed clarification of the rules on listed and non-listed parts," Racing Point said in a statement released on Sunday.

"The stewards and all parties involved in the appeals process recognise that there was a lack of clarity in the regulations and that we did not deliberately break them.

"Now that the ambiguity around the regulations has been settled, we have decided to withdraw our appeal in the wider interests of the sport.

"This issue has been a distraction for us and the other teams, but now we and everyone else can get back to focusing solely on what we’re all here to do: racing hard and providing excitement and entertainment for the millions of F1 fans around the world."
