Spa-Francorchamps circuit set to undergo €80 million facelift

Spa-Francorchamps has revealed the details of an €80 million renovation project that will allow the legendary track to cater to both Formula 1 and motorcycle racing in the future.

Spa's plan to apply for an FIM Grade C licence to welcome motorcycle racing back to its track has compelled the venue to undertake a series of extensive modifications to the run-off areas of several corners where gravel traps will be installed.

But the renovation project will also include an upgrade to part of the track's infrastructure, with new spectator facilities being gradually added over the next ten years.

The remodeled series of grandstands and VIP areas will increase the track's seating capacity by 13,000 seats, or double the venue's current permanent seating capacity.

The first phase of Spa's facelift will be completed in time for the EWC Spa 24 Hours Motorcycle event scheduled for June 2021.

"With the investment we have lined up over the next 10 years, we are showing that dreams can become reality," said Spa-Francorchamps boss Nathalie Maillet.

"By starting with a prestigious endurance race, we will achieve the first goal of our ‘Motorcycle Project’.”

"This announcement is even more important in this difficult period of closed doors events during the COVID-19 pandemic," a statement by the circuit added.

"Racing is in the DNA of Spa-Francorchamps, but it's not the same without the fans. But this project also includes improvements for the spectators."

He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
