Correa back behind the wheel 533 days after Spa tragedy

Juan Manuel Correa slot himself behind the wheel of single-seater race car yesterday at Paul Ricard, 533 days after the 21-year-old's tragic Formula 2 crash at Spa in August, 2019.

The Ecuadorian-American hopeful was severely injured in the horror crash that claimed the life of French driver and Renault protégé Anthoine Hubert during the Belgian GP weekend.

Correa endured months of hardship and underwent 26 surgeries to regain his mobility and strength, and the hope of pursuing his career in motorsport.

Those hopes have now turned into reality for Correa who will race this season in the FIA Formula 3 Championship with front-running squad ART Grand Prix, with preparations with his new team kicking off on Monday at Paul Ricard.

"533 days after Spa, I have gotten back, for the first time, behind the wheel of a formula car," Correa tweeted.

"It’s hard to describe with words what this means to me. All I can say is thank you to all of you who have supported me up to this point. Antoine Hubert was with me today."
