Emotional Tsunoda trying to cut down on 'swearing'

AlphaTauri rookie Yuki Tsunoda says he'll try to keep his emotions in check going forward after a moment in FP1 led to an outburst over his team's radio.

Tsunoda ran wide at the final corner in Friday's first session in Bahrain and immediately flared up, quipping over the radio, "Come on I got f***ing traffic!"

The 20-year-old Japanese charger admitted that unleashing his emotions was his "weakest point" and one that he intends to improve.

"I always try to be more calm in every session, so this is like my weakest point," he said.

"Also, on the mentality side, last year I was swearing a lot and losing my focus, so I’m trying to train myself not to swear a lot.

"I was a bit too emotional in FP1. In FP2 there was no swearing, so a good step for me from FP1! That’s good."

Tsunoda did indeed improve in the evening session, clocking in P7n 0.447s adrift from pace setter Max Verstappen but almost 0.2s faster than AlphaTauri teammate Pierre Gasly.

"We’ve got great pace this weekend as a team and I’m keen to see how I perform tomorrow in my first F1 qualifying session," he said.

"I’m still learning a lot in the car and it’s obviously only my first race weekend so I’m keen to not put too much pressure on myself but I’m looking forward to getting out on track for my first race and seeing what we can do."

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
