Tsunoda suffers another angry reprimand from Marko

AlphaTauri's Yuki Tsunoda was on the receiving end of another berating by Red Bull motorsport boss Helmut Marko after a contact with the barriers cut short the rookie's FP2 session on Thursday.

Tsunoda has struggled since the start of his maiden campaign in F1 to put together a clean weekend. His premature exit from qualifying in Q1 at Imola following an error led to a scolding from Marko.

But as a first-time visitor to Monaco, the Japanese charger was warned to steer clear of the treacherous track's boundaries in order to make sure that he put some proper mileage under his belt.

Tsunoda clocked in P10 in FP1 but achieved just 11 laps in the afternoon before damaging the suspension on his AT02 at the second Swimming Pool chicane and sitting out the rest of the day, a shortfall that did not amuse Marko.

"We told him a thousand times, it's all about one thing in Monaco: making metres, making metres, making metres," an angry Marko said.

"He should really learn to show some discipline."

Tsunoda insisted he hadn't been pushing too hard before his mishap but reckons he was caught out by a mix of dust and tyre degradation.

"I didn't push too hard in the entry, I think I just had a loss of grip, in the end," he explained. "I think there was a lot of degradation there and quite a lot of dust from the wind.

"I just completely lost the rear between 15 and 16 and went into the wall. So I just had to finish the session."

Despite the incident, Tsunoda said there was a silver lining to the setback."

"I have two [sets of] softs for Saturday so I think it’s not the worst-case or the end of the world," he said. Just, I have to prepare more for Saturday and try to put it all together."
