Sergio Perez's father Antonio Perez Garibay is heading a plan to bring a second F1 race to Mexico in the future, with Cancun cited as a potential venue.
Formula 1 returned to Mexico City in 2015, with the race quickly becoming one of the sport's most popular events.
Unfortunately, the country was deprived of its Grand Prix last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but so far F1 is still on track to race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez at the end of October, a week after the US Grand Prix in Austin.
But Mexico is now promoting the idea of adding a second race in Cancun from 2024, with Antonio Perez involved in the project.
"I had talks with the people of Formula 1 to take it to Cancun," he told Mexican website Reforma.
"There is a group of investors interested in reviving the project, and the people of Formula 1 were very interested and we are going to start talks.
It is a new project, we do not have to do anything [with previous projects], it is a new group of investors and I have been involved with the project, let it be all for Mexico, and hope the date is for April [2024]."
Formula 1's calendar is expected to swell to 25 races in the future, with a number of core events complimented by countries or venues rotating their presence on the schedule.
Antonio Perez was in the paddock last weekend in Hungary, not only to support his son's efforts with Red Bull, which were unfortunately short-lived, but especially to meet with F1's top brass and FIA president Jean Todt.
"It would start from scratch and we are going to start with the letters of commitment," commented Perez.
"But it was received very well, they did me the favour of meeting with me – Jean Todt and Stefano Domenicali. We are going to give it shape and I came to [Budapest] to see this project and now I’ll return.
"They told us ‘I hope that by 2024 we already have Checo as Formula 1 champion’ and this is going to give more, this opens up a great panorama."
