Sir Lewis Hamilton has reportedly agreed to invest into a consortium bidding to takeover the ownership of Chelsea Football Club.
According to an exclusive report from Sky News, Hamilton has teamed up with 23-times tennis Grand Slam winner Serena Williams to invest an estimated £20 million into the consortium led by former Liverpool FC chairman Sir Martin Broughton which ambitions to acquire Chelsea.
The two high-profile athletes, who are also friends, would invest £10 million each in the venture.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich committed last month to selling his prized asset – which could be worth as much as £2.5 billion - as a result of the sanctions levied upon Russian oligarchs by the U.K.
However, while Sir Martin Broughton official bid is considered to be a strong contender to win the race for Chelsea's takeover, the consortium isn't the only entity bidding for the European Champions.
A short list compiled by Raine Group, the US bank overseeing the sale, also includes American financier Todd Boehly, a part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, while a group led by the Ricketts family, the owners of the Chicago Cubs, has withdrawn its bid.
Sky News reported that a source close to the Broughton group said the addition of Sir Lewis and Serena Williams was "a serious investment decision because of their experience at building global sports brands".
