McLaren signs up René Rast for Formula E team

McLaren Racing have announced that former Audi stalwart René Rast has joined its Neom McLaren Formula E team for the all-electric series' Season 9.

McLaren's entry into Formula E has come following its acquisition of the Mercedes EQ works outfit, which capped off its presence in the series recently with a second consecutive world title in both the Drivers and Teams championship.

Rast, a three-time DTM champion who enjoyed a twelve-year association with Ausi and who competed in Formula E in 2020 and in 2021 with Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler, is the first driver nominated by McLaren for its FE endeavour.

Oddly, freshly crowned FE champion and former McLaren F1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne hasn't been retained by the Woking-based outfit.

And Rast, who will dovetail his FE commitment with McLaren with a works BMW programme, is equally delighted to join his new squad.

"As a racing fan, McLaren has always had huge appeal," said the 35-year-old racer.

"It’s an iconic name in motorsport with a rich history, so I feel privileged and proud to be able represent McLaren in Formula E next season.

"I’ve done a season in Formula E before, it was a great experience, and I felt after that year I wasn’t done yet.

"I’m excited that I am now getting the opportunity to continue that journey. I’m extremely motivated and have no doubt we will create something great together. I can’t wait to get started!"
