Magnussen family adds Rolex 24 to winter schedule

Kevin and Jan Magnussen are racing in the Gulf 12 Hours in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, but father and son will come together again for the Rolex 24 at Daytona early next year.

This weekend at Yas Marina, the Magnussens are sharing the wheel of an MDK Motorsports Ferrari 488 GT3 with American sports car driver Mark Kvamme.

The trio was set to line up P15 on Sunday's grid, with Kevin and his father renewing a partnership they enjoyed at le Mans in 2021 when they shared an High Class Racing LMP2car with fellow Dane Anders Fjordbach.

"Racing with my dad is always something that I enjoy a lot," said the Haas F1 driver.

"It’s such a special thing that we’re still both active racing drivers at the same time. He’s not that old, so I feel like I have to grab the opportunity, as much as I can, while he’s still in good shape and fast.

"It’s the first time that we’re going to drive in a GT car together and I think he’s going to be pretty hard to beat in that one, but we’ll see!"

But after Sunday's event and a good rest through the holidays, Magnussen will warm up to his 2023 season with an outing ay Daytona in late January, again with his father and Kvamme but this time at the wheel of an MDK Motorsport's entered Porsche 911 GT3 R.

"I’m super excited about this!" said the recent Brazilian Grand Prix poleman.

"The Rolex 24 is legendary, and I have had some fantastic moments there with Chip Ganassi Racing the past two years.

"Being able to do such a race together with my dad is amazing. Again, I cannot thank Mark Kvamme enough for setting this up.

After his winter escapades, Magnussen will focus his attention on F1, but his father - a multiple IMSA and former Corvette Racing factory driver - will race full-time in the 2023 Michelin Endurance Cup with MDK Motorsports.

"I'm also excited to become a permanent part of MDK Motorsports’ Michelin Endurance Cup campaign," said Magnussen Sr.

"It’s been almost three years since my last race in America. In the meantime, I’ve made selected outings in the FIA World Endurance Championship, Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia, Le Mans Cup and TCR Denmark.

"However, America has been my second home since I switched from Formula One to sportscars in 1999, so I’m looking forward to coming back to IMSA again."
