FIA spares Hamilton jewellery ban thanks to exemption

The FIA has granted an exemption to Lewis Hamilton that will allow the Briton to wear his nose stud while racing in Bahrain.

It looked like another silly jewellery saga tug-of-war was on the horizon between the FIA and Hamilton when Mercedes failed to submit to the Bahrain Grand Prix stewards the self-scrutineering sheet in which the Briton should have been declared in compliance with the jewellery ban sporting rule.

However, Mercedes has submitted to the FIA a medical report that stated that Hamilton could risk "disfigurement" due to the frequent removal of his nose stud.

Mercedes sporting director Ron Meadows was summoned to the stewards to further clarify the issue, after which the officials said that "no further action will be taken".

"The stewards having heard from a team representative and receiving a medical report from the team doctor of Mercedes, which requested an exemption," read a statement from the Bahrain Grand Prix officials.

"The stewards consulted the FIA medical delegate, who viewed the medical report, examined the driver and concurred with the opinion therein.

"We have determined to take no further action as there are concerns about disfigurement with frequent attempts at removal of the device."
