Alonso names three tracks where Aston can win in 2023

Fernando Alonso has singled out three venues that he believes will offer Aston Martin their best chances of pulling off a win this season.

A rejuvenated Alonso is racing at the front of the field once again in F1, albeit well adrift from Red Bull's pair of runaway RB19s steered by Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.

But with four podiums in five races and a fourth-place finish to boot, the Spaniard is third in the drivers' standings while Aston Martin is second in F1's Constructors' championship.

Alonso's remarkable performances so far with Team Silverstone have inevitably led team and driver to assess their chances of achieving a race win together, a feat last enjoyed by the two-time world champion almost a decade ago in Spain with Ferrari.

Surprises can happen in Formula 1, although they have been few and far between lately.

While a rival's misfortunes, special conditions or a bold strategy can steer a driver onto the highest step of the podium, Alonso believes that three tracks where Aston's gap to Red Bull is likely to be narrower could yield an outright win for his team.

"We seem to have a car that is maybe not the fastest on the straights," he told Sky F1. "We need to improve that, but we are very good on the corners."

"So I would say that the slowest speeds of the championship, let’s say Monaco, Budapest, Singapore.

"These kind of circuits, I think we put our main hopes at the moment."

A win on merit remains a tall order for Aston Martin and its star driver. But should ever a gremlin creep into Red Bull's works, Alonso hopes he'll be right behind to pounce and take advantage of the opportunity.

"I think at the beginning of the year a podium was amazing," he said. "Now after four podiums we want obviously more and at least a second place.

"But, you know, the two Red Bulls they are always unbreakable, and they are always super-fast. It [Red Bull's RB19] is stronger, it’s faster and the reliability has been always outstanding for them as well, finishing both cars in every race.

"If one day there is a crack there, if there is an opportunity, we need to make sure we are in that position and we’re still not making mistakes at any point in the weekend."
