Hulkenberg 'crazy' P2 in Montreal qualifying under threat!

A smooth and solid job by Haas in qualifying in Montreal and a flawless lap in the treacherous conditions earned Nico Hulkenberg his first front row start in F1 since the 2016 Austrian Grand Prix.

While teammate Kevin Magnussen failed to make the Q3 cut, Hulkenberg navigated his way into the top-ten shootout ahead of executing a second perfect flyer on the soft compound that enabled him to leapfrog F1's usual frontrunners bar poleman Max Verstappen.

The German driver e,joyed a lucky break however, setting his quickest lap just second before the red flag was deployed as a result of Oscar Piastri's crash.

Conditions worsened during the neutralization, which safeguarded Hulkenberg's runner-up spot.

"It was a wild quali, it was crazy," commented the Hulk, who applauded his team for a perfectly executed job.

"Changing conditions are tricky, especially around here with the walls, so close on the exits and the speeds being high.

"Obviously wet, dry and back to wet, so you have to readjust all the time. But it was fun. It was good.

"This comes as a bit unexpected, but obviously very happy and proud. The team did a solid job. It was very smooth. So super happy.

"It's just a lot of communications, a lot of radio calls going back and forth. Obviously, you look what the others do, and you think for yourself, but I think we hit it pretty well today. No major mistakes."

Hulkenberg will try to make the most of his advantageous starting position, but admitted that keeping his theoretically faster pursuers behind in the forecasted dry condition will be a tall order.

"We'll have to see. Obviously, first row is nice, it is very sweet," Hulkenberg said.

“"Let's see how long we can keep that and let's see what the conditions are tomorrow. All the signs suggest that it will be very different: a dry race. So a very different cup of tea.

"I just want to go out there, race as hard as we can squeeze it. And hopefully we'll get a nice result."

Nico Hulkenberg’s shock Canadian Grand Prix front row qualifying position has been put in doubt by a potential red flag infringement.

An hour after qualifying, the stewards announced that Hulkenberg and a Haas representative would need to attend a hearing at 6.40pm local time over an alleged breach of the minimum sector time every car must adhere to for safety reasons while returning to the pits following a red flag.

It is alleged that Hulkenberg's failed to adhere to the required lap delta during his in-lap as measured by the on-board ECU unit.
