GM appoints Graeme Lowdon as Cadillac F1 Team Principal

General Motors and TWG Global have announced that Graeme Lowdon has been appointed team principal of the GM-Cadillac Formula 1 team, which is set to join the grid in 2026.

The announcement marks another significant step forward in Cadillac's ambition to establish itself at the pinnacle of motorsport as the sport ushers in a new era of technical regulations.

Lowdon, a familiar figure in the F1 paddock, who previously led the Virgin, Marussia, and Manor F1 teams, will oversee the development and operations of the new American outfit borne out of Andretti Global's efforts to establish itself in Formula 1.

Over the past two years, Lowdon has been working behind the scenes, helping to lay the groundwork for the championship's 11th team alongside GM and TWG Global's leadership.

The 59-year-old Briton is also incidentally a close advisor to Chinese F1 driver Zhou Guanyu, a potential contender for a seat at the future US F1 team.

“I'm truly honored to be appointed as the principal team of this exciting new team and I would like to thank everyone involved for placing their trust in me,” said Lowdon.

“I believe that Formula 1 is the greatest sport team in the world, and teams are all about people. This is a team with a real love for, and desire to go, racing, and we have the experience and expertise to do just that.

"Racing is at the very heart of everything that we do. This is what I want to see in a team, and I really want to be part of it,” he added.

“I don't underestimate the task ahead and I have the utmost respect for the competition. I look forward to the challenge of racing. In the meantime, our work continues at pace.”

The GM-Cadillac F1 project is now spearheaded by TWG Global CEO Dan Towriss, who took charge of Andretti Global's efforts to enter Formula 1 after the latter's unsuccessful period of negotiations with Grand Prix racing's stakeholders.

Towriss praised Lowdon's contributions to the project so far, highlighting his blend of technical and managerial expertise.

“Graeme has been advising our team for the last two years as we have built out our operations,” said the American entrepreneur.

“His experience on both the technical and managerial sides of Formula 1 and other motorsports ventures will serve him well as he builds the Cadillac Formula 1 team.”

GM president Mark Reuss echoed Towriss' comments, emphasizing Lowdon's credentials and his alignment with Cadillac's vision for the team.

“Graeme has been a pleasure to work with over the past two years, and we're excited he will lead our journey to the 2026 Formula 1 grid as main team,” said Reuss.

“He has great racing expertise, he knows how to assemble a high-performing team, and he embodies the values the Cadillac Formula 1 Team will represent in all its endeavors, on or off the track.”

With a long road ahead before Cadillac's competitive debut in 2026, Lowdon and his team are now hard at work building the infrastructure, staff, and strategy needed to take on the power of Formula 1's elite teams.

For now, Cadillac's entry adds fresh excitement to the sport, promising a new chapter for American participation on the global stage.
