Hulkenberg: No regrets over missing out on a top seat in F1

Nico Hulkenberg has never secured a coveted seat with a top team in Formula 1, although his name has frequently been linked to such opportunities.

When the German driver debuted in Formula 1 with Williams in 2010, his undisputable talent seemed destined for the sport’s zenith.

Yet, as the years rolled on, his name became more synonymous with what might have been rather than what was.

Today, Hulkenberg’s career seems less about missed opportunities and more about a quiet contentment forged through experience

With 227 Grand Prix starts to his name, the 37-year-old’s story offers a rare glimpse into the psyche of a driver who has made peace with the hand he’s been dealt.

“In the end there were always some little things and the last piece of the puzzle was missing for one reason or another,” Hulkenberg told Motorsport.com as he reflected on the elusive nature of his missed opportunities in F1.

“It's so simple and straightforward in the end. It's not done until it's really done and signed. I came really close at times, but it doesn't count if it's not signed by the other party.

“So we can talk for a long time about how close I was or wasn't, but in the end it doesn't matter. There was something missing.”

No Room for Regret

Such an admission could easily be tinged with regret, but Hulkenberg carries none. When asked if he looks back on those moments with nostalgia, his response is resolute: “No, not at all. I’m not a nostalgic person.”

After parting ways with Renault at the end of 2019, it seemed as though Hulkenberg’s time in Formula 1 had run its course.

He spent several years on the sidelines, serving as a reserve driver, a role that often feels like purgatory for racers of his caliber.

Yet, in 2023, a surprising twist saw him return to the grid with Haas F1, embarking on a chapter that would defy even his own expectations.

"It's a super cool story," Hulkenberg said. "It was successful and I didn't dare dream of it. I didn't expect it and I didn't think it.”

A Surprising Comeback with Haas

Rejoining Formula 1 with Haas, a midfield team at best, Hulkenberg approached the opportunity with tempered expectations.

"To be honest, I came here with relatively low expectations. I thought more: 'Hey, I've extended my career, just enjoy it, make the most of it and stay as positive as possible'. In those two years I simply learned a lot."

Yet, it was more than just a learning experience. It was a rediscovery of joy in a sport that often demands as much emotionally as it does physically

"I just really enjoyed it, I had fun with it," he continued. "And that hasn't always been the case in Formula 1. That was of great value to me and that also meant that I could perform in the end.”

A New Chapter with Sauber and Audi

As his time with Haas wound down, another unexpected chapter opened. For 2025, Hulkenberg will rejoin Sauber, a team that struggled through a dire 2024 season.

Yet, the allure of the future is undeniable: with the Hinwil squad Sauber transitioning into an Audi works team in 2026, Hulkenberg’s long-awaited chance to lead a top-tier effort might finally materialize.

“The fact that this Audi story follows the Haas chapter... I never saw that coming," he admitted. "But from that point of view, 'the unexpected often happens' fits in to a certain extent."

In a sport where dreams are often tied to silverware, Hulkenberg’s perspective is refreshing. His career may lack the glittering accolades of champions, but it is rich in lessons, growth, and, above all, resilience.

For Nico Hulkenberg, the journey has always been its own reward.
