Verstappen to Aston Martin: ‘Negotiations ongoing,’ says insider

The possibility of Max Verstappen, the dominant force in Formula 1, switching allegiances to Aston Martin in 2026 is refusing to fade away.

While some may dismiss it as fanciful speculation, credible voices within the paddock suggest there's more to this than meets the eye.

One such voice is that of respected journalist Mark Hughes, who, speaking on The Race F1 podcast, lent significant weight to the story.

A $1.2 Billion Bid for F1’s Biggest Star?

The rumors first caught fire after a Daily Mail report claimed that Aston Martin had launched a staggering $1.2 billion bid to lure Verstappen away from Red Bull.

While that price tag might seem outrageous, Mark Hughes doesn’t dismiss the core of the story.

“Not sure about the price tag, it sounds like one of those made-up newspaper headlines where they sit around and decide how much it should be and then decide that’s what it is,” he said.

However, he made it clear that the rumor itself carries weight.

“The idea of Max Verstappen to Aston I think is very real and if what we’re hearing on the grapevine is true, those negotiations are ongoing.

“So even before we started hearing these rumours from within the paddock and not just from people speculating on it from the outside, it did make perfect sense.”

Why Verstappen and Aston Martin Could Be the Perfect Match

Hughes provided insight into why such a blockbuster move makes sense for both parties.

Verstappen has been at Red Bull for a decade, cementing himself as one of the most dominant drivers in F1 history.

But with a new regulatory era beginning in 2026 and Adrian Newey—the architect of many Red Bull championship cars—reportedly joining Aston Martin, Verstappen could see this as an ideal time for a fresh challenge.

“Max has been at Red Bull for a decade, it’s a new formula, a new engine partner, Adrian Newey has gone,” Hughes added.

“Max has won multiple world titles and said that only the first one really matters to him and the rest have been a nice indulgence.

“So he's clearly ready for a new challenge just the time that Lawrence Stroll has brought this incredible array of talents and facilities together and has taken Honda with whom Verstappen and has a great relationship already, with them.

“It's the obvious next step for both parties I'd say so yes, I'd put quite a lot of weight behind the rumours.”

Mike Krack’s High Praise for Verstappen

Adding further intrigue, Aston Martin chief trackside officer Mike Krack recently showered Verstappen with praise, particularly for his 2024 championship-winning campaign.

“This year’s [title] was probably the best we have seen from him,” Krack told RacingNews365.

Krack highlighted Verstappen’s dominance in a car that, in his view, wasn’t always the strongest on the grid.

His performance at the Brazilian Grand Prix stood out as a defining moment. Starting 17th on a rain-soaked grid, Verstappen carved through the field and won by a staggering 30 seconds.

“Brazil was a masterpiece,” Krack said. “There was basically not much overtaking, even in the wet, but he just went through the field and left them all behind.

“It’s nice to see that there is a very high level of driving in Formula 1, but then there is something extra with some champions, and Verstappen has that.”

Such glowing remarks from a key figure at Aston Martin have only added fuel to the fire.

Why Aston Martin Wants Verstappen

Aston Martin, led by billionaire Lawrence Stroll, has made no secret of its ambitions to become a championship-winning team.

In recent years, the Silverstone-based squad has aggressively expanded, constructing a state-of-the-art factory, securing Honda as an engine supplier for 2026, and signing top-tier talent like Enrico Cardile and Adrian Newey.

Verstappen would be the crown jewel in this carefully assembled empire, offering not just driving excellence but also the star power to make Aston Martin a global F1 force.

The Roadblocks

While Aston Martin’s vision and resources are undeniable, luring Verstappen away from Red Bull won’t be easy.

The Dutchman is contracted with the Milton Keynes team until the end of 2028, and Red Bull remains one of the sport’s most dominant forces.

Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff with Max Verstappen and Helmut Marko.

Furthermore, Mercedes, which courted Verstappen last season, is likely to table a firm offer at some point.

But if Aston Martin’s package next year lives up to expectations, and Verstappen feels he’s ready for a new chapter, a move could be on the cards post-2026.

It may be a perfect storm brewing for both Verstappen and Aston Martin. For now, fans will have to wait and see if this rumor turns into one of the most earth-shattering transfers in F1 history.
